Form & Field is a journal about the spaces we pass through every day, and the decisions that make them work.

Material samples on an architecture studio table

Architecture at a useful scale

We are interested in the whole building and the small junction: the entrance someone can find, a room that catches the afternoon light, a repair that allows a useful object to stay.

Our stories begin with a concrete question. What does a courtyard need to support daily life? How much space does a balcony really offer? What should a new use keep from an old workshop?

This edition presents original design studies and essays. The projects and contributors are illustrative; they give a new publication a complete starting collection to replace with its own reporting, photographs and credits.

Portrait of Nora Hale

Nora Hale

Editor · housing and public space

Nora’s brief is the route from the street to the front door: shared entrances, landings, courtyards and the details neighbours negotiate.

Portrait of Felix Ward

Felix Ward

Writer · materials and reuse

Felix writes about materials already in use. His pieces follow worn stair treads, repaired joints and the records that make the next repair easier.

Portrait of Maya Linwood

Maya Linwood

Writer · interiors and landscape

Maya looks at rooms from both sides of the window, connecting furniture and daylight with the trees, terraces and gardens outside.

Portrait of Leon Park

Leon Park

Writer · design practice

Leon writes about drawing and design practice, starting with the details a plan can overlook: a door swing, a stair landing or a narrow route past a table.
